OSH Bangladesh 2019 Conference to Unravel Occupational Health Issues in Organisations 18th-20th April at ICCB, Dhaka
The direct costs associated with occupational health emergencies include the pain and suffering of the injury or illness, the loss of income, possible loss of a job, and the associated treatment costs. It is estimated that the indirect costs of an accident or illness can be four to ten times greater than the direct costs. There is need for greater focus on health issues at work and ensuring safety remains a priority for employers and employees. Some of the common occupational disease include: respiratory diseases e.g. asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; skin diseases; asbestos-related disease; cancers; noise induced hearing damage; Hand-arm vibration syndrome; musculoskeletal disease; and mental stress. A competent industrial hygienist can help develop a robust, practical and cost-effective exposure control strategy, taking into account the human elements of the work activity. Overall, they can play an integral role in reducing the numbers of people dying, or developing life-changing conditions, as a result of unnecessary exposures at work. Skills development, hazard recognition, a comprehensive training programme can help workers to recognize early signs/symptoms of any potential occupational disease.
