 The Mumbai Fire Brigade Officers Association (FBOA), the welfare body that seeks to protect interests of Mumbai fire officers, has threatened to stop carrying out fire safety inspections of commercial buildings in the city. The association has written a letter to Brihanmumbai Municipal Commissioner (BMC), Ajoy Mehta, expressing their displeasure over the arrest of a fire officer in the recent Kamala Mills fire tragedy.

Worker Unemployment Slated to Fall to 5.5% in 2018: ILO Study

The global economic growth has rebounded and is expected to remain stable but low global economic growth increased to 3.6 per cent in 2017, after hitting a six-year low of 3.2 per cent in 2016. The recovery was broad based, driven by expansions in developing, emerging and developed countries alike. Future growth is likely to stay below 4 per cent, as economic activity normalizes in most major economies without significant stimulus and fixed investment remains at a moderate level.

The First Labour Code on Wages Likely to be Passed in Parliament

As part of its push towards labour reforms, the government is aggressively pushing for the passage of the first Labour Code on Wages in Parliament during the budget session. This bill shall enable the government to set benchmarks on minimum wages for different regions across the country. The Labour Ministry is anticipating the Parliament’s select committee to table the bill in the budget session by the end of this month.

India Loses 20x More Workers to Occupational Hazards than the UK

A recent study undertaken by the British Safety Council states that 48,000 deaths occur in India annually due to organisations not following occupational safety and health (OSH) guidelines. If that was not enough an even more worrying trend is that of 38 casualties occurring in the construction industry alone on a daily basis. Unfortunately little is being done to arrest this trend as most such cases go unreported.
