80% of All Occupational Injuries Occur In MSMEs: EU Report

Many MSEs find managing OSH challenging, and workers are more likely to be at risk of safety or health issues in these enterprises than in other, larger enterprises. In fact, more than 80% of all occupational injuries in the EU occur in micro, small or medium-sized businesses — and the smaller the business, the higher the risk. OSH awareness and compliance is improving but is still limited only to the organized sector.  So, while you find a lot of OSH initiatives being undertaken by the very large organizations in India, the awareness is next to negligible in SMEs. This is radically different from the developed world where not only OSH awareness is high among organizations and their employees, but also strict enforcement of such guidelines takes place. As opposed to this, India lacks a proper enforcement mechanism.

BRITISH SAFETY COUNCIL LAUNCHES MENTAL HEALTH TRAINING COURSES

The British Safety Council has launched a range of training courses, designed to help bosses support staff who are experiencing mental health issues. The courses come as evidence grows that more people are experiencing mental health problems due to work. According to the Thriving At Work report, which was published in October, poor mental health costs the UK economy between £74 and £99 billion a year and 300,000 people with long-term mental health problems lose their jobs each year. And a recent report by Business in the Community claimed 60% of employees have experienced a mental health problem due to work and around a third (31%) have been formally diagnosed with a mental health issue.

Child Labour Investigation Initiated in TN Spinning Mill Suicide Case

The case of a 14-year old girl committing suicide in the textile mill in Southern India, after working in a rigorous 16-hour shift is being investigated upon by the authorities. The trade union and human rights activists have raised voices against the long-prevalent practice of employing child labour by such industries and also the poor conditions for workers in general.

HONEYWELL ANNOUNCES A CLOUD-BASED AR/VR SIMULATION TOOL FOR THE INDUSTRIAL WORKFORCE

Recently, the Honeywell announced a cloud-based simulation tool to train the industrial workforce in order to improve their skills. The simulation tool developed by the Honeywell is a combination of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR). The Honeywell mentioned in the press note that in the coming next 5 yeara around 50 percent of industrial plant personnel are going to retire. In such circumstances, the Honeywell Connected Plant Skills Insight Immersive Competency is designed to bring new industrial workers up to speed quickly by enhancing training and delivering it in new and contemporary ways.

India Celebrates National Safety Week 2018

The National Safety Day/Week Campaign is celebrated in India every year (organized by the National Safety Council) to commemorate the establishment of the National Safety Council on 4th of March 1966, as well as enhance the safety awareness among people. National Safety Council of India is a self-governing body (non profit and nongovernmental organization for public service) that was established under the Societies Act in Mumbai, and has over 8000 members. The Safety Week is a national movement carried out on an annual basis to prevent and lessen the loss of life during industrial accidents, including financial loss by availing safety, health and environment related support services.

The recent blaze in Delhi’s Bawana small-scale industrial township has once again brought to light pertinent facts about how India’s small industrial units are run and why they do not take adequate precautions to ensure workers safety. How Delhi Fire Service Fights 27,000 Fire Incidents Annually

Delhi Fire Service came into existence in the year 1942 after amalgamation of 2 fire stations, which were separately functioning under the control of Delhi Municipal Committee and New Delhi Municipal Committee. After the World War-II, the establishment of Delhi Fire Service was approved as a provincial force. At that time, Delhi Fire Service had in all 4 fire stations with 14 appliances and total staff numbering to 186 only.

Safety awareness needs to be spread in India on a priority. For this, we first need to understand the problems on ground, across industry and come up with solutions. People still do not take worker safety seriously in India. A good beginning would be to educate the ground-level worker about the importance of his safety and well-being in his personal and professional life and get him to demand safety gear from his employers as part of his contract. The whole mindset needs to change as this would alone lead to change in the whole industry.

Hyderabad Sewer Workers Suffer Prolonged Exposure to Disease-Causing Environment

Sewer linemen attend to blocked-sewer complaints from across Hyderabad. They begin their day from the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) office in Sitaphalmandi early in the morning. Their job requires them to climb down manholes, clear the clogged filth with bare hands and move on to the next sewer. Most require to clean at least six-seven sewers each day.

Seven Health Workers Die While Cleaning Septic Tank Near Palamaner, AP

Seven workers of a private firm paid with their lives the penalty for entering septic tanks without any safety gear. The death occurred owing to asphyxiation caused by poisonous gases when they entered a septic tank to repair a flushing machine, at Sri Venkateswara Hatcheries at Moram village, known as Kolla Farm locality, of Palamaner mandal. The victims were declared brought dead at the government hospital. Three other workers who managed to survive, were shifted to CMS Hospital at Vellore in Tamil Nadu. The district collector P.S. Pradyumna and Police Superintendant S.V. Rajasekhar Babu rushed to the spot to get a firsthand experience of the unfortunate incident.

Worker Unemployment Slated to Fall to 5.5% in 2018: ILO Study

The global economic growth has rebounded and is expected to remain stable but low global economic growth increased to 3.6 per cent in 2017, after hitting a six-year low of 3.2 per cent in 2016. The recovery was broad based, driven by expansions in developing, emerging and developed countries alike. India Loses 20x More Workers to Occupational Hazards than the UK

A recent study undertaken by the British Safety Council states that 48,000 deaths occur in India annually due to organisations not following occupational safety and health (OSH) guidelines. If that was not enough an even more worrying trend is that of 38 casualties occurring in the construction industry alone on a daily basis. Unfortunately little is being done to arrest this trend as most such cases go unreported.
